Which learning style does your child utilise most? Are they more auditory, kinesthetic, or visual? This can be determined by simply watching them. Are they eager to get up and dance and sing? Do they enjoy molding clay or playdough? Or would they rather sit back and watch the teacher work or the tv.?

When my daughter was first starting out in school, it was very apparent that she had a more auditory approach to learning. She loved socialising with other kids, singing and talking. When it came to studying at home, one of the things she couldn’t stand was writing. Sure, she liked coloring but having to sit down and practice writing was the bane of her existence. She despised it! Knowing that she was more inclined to an auditory style of learning, we would sit down and sing out our lesson plans. Spelling was always fun for her, and while math wasn’t her favorite subject, it became one of the things she loved studying because we would speak out the numbers instead of merely writing them down.
Make studying a part of your child’s routine.
After kindergarten, my daughter and I would always go to lunch together before heading home. We would have an hour of play, followed by snack time and then in the early afternoon when it was the hottest part of the day, we would study. She was so used to this routine that as she got older, she did it on her own. And yes, we still study together!
Make study time fun time!
I found out quickly that if I made study time a chore, my daughter treated it like a chore. If I made study time into play, she would study willingly. There’s no reason why studying shouldn’t be fun for your child. And, if they aren’t having fun with it, explore different ways you can make it more fun for them!
In summary, helping your child study in kindergarten can be something they look forward to. If they aren’t enjoying study time at home, then it may be time to switch things up. Look more deeply into what their learning style is and see if you can turn study time into a game. You not only set your child up for success in the long run, but you set yourself up for success as well!
