By kindergarten, many children begin to grasp the concept of sharing, but what about when they are younger?  By the time many children reach the two’s and three’s, they can become possessive of what is theirs.  They want what they want, and they want it now!  It is important for parents to understand that for toddlers, sharing is beyond their understanding.  They are more interested in finding out what is “theirs” instead of what they can “share.”

Here are some tips on how to teach your child to share.

Tips to Teach Your Child to Share

  1. Monkey See Monkey Do

Practice sharing with your child at home.  Share things with them such as food, ice cream, snacks or perhaps one of their toys.  Explain to them why sharing is important as you do this with them.

  1. Start Young

From the time your child can grasp an object, you can teach them sharing by passing the ball back and forth and vocalising what it means.  Learning how to take turns with others is one of the first rules of sharing.

  1. Make it into a Game

Sharing can be fun if you make it fun.  There are many ways you can turn sharing into a game, such as giving your child a sticker on a chart every time he/she “shares” something with someone else in the home.

  1. Bring a Timer to Play Dates

This helps children take turns.  Every time the timer rings, it’s the other child’s turn to play with that toy.

  1. Use Descriptive Praise

Descriptive praise is a little different than simply saying, “Good boy,” or “Good girl.”  Instead, be more descriptive such as, “I am so proud of you for sharing your toy with your friend.  Look how happy he looks!”

  1. Celebrate Desired Behaviour

Make a big deal out of your child sharing.  This helps them understand that good behaviour is noticed and appreciated by mom and dad!

In essence, if you decide you want to teach your child to share, it will take a little work on your part.  But it is all worth it in the end – both for you and your kiddo!

About Little Human Scholars School in PJ

Little Human Scholars is an all-in-one childcare solution.  It is a preschool, playschool, kindergarten, nursery and full day daycare centre (with extended hours) located in the heart of PJ.

In fact, the location is one of the things which makes Little Human Scholars so sought after – it is conveniently nestled near Jalan Gasing, University hospital, PJ Old town, PJ New town, Jaya One, Jaya33, and the PJ IT Mall.

The best part is LHS has premiere services many other schools in PJ don’t offer such as full day daycare with extended hours, CCTV access for parents, and a nifty little phone app called Toddlytic which provides parents with automatic updates on their child’s development, behaviour and health checks.

With full-time guards always present at each of their locations, access to CCTV (which is in every room except the office, bathroom and kitchen areas), and very strict pick-up and drop-off rules, Little Human Scholars treats every child who walks into its hallways as one of their own children!

This place has it all:  location, safety, health, IGSCE curriculum and play-based learning.  What more could you ask for?  Did I mention they also have transportation services and offer meal plans for students?  It doesn’t get any better than that.

If you are interested in a tour of one of our centres (that’s right, there’s more than one), all you need to do is fill out the form here or call +6017-7303-025 and an LHS administrative staff will get back with you shortly!

Cheers,
