Some love it, and others require a bit more persuasion – at least when it comes to getting your child to love school. And getting your child to love school early on is one way you can set them up for success later in life. Continuing education is necessary in today’s fast-paced, technologically driven world. As much as many of us don’t like it, getting good grades can impact our future both for Uni as well as landing a good career later on.
In essence, having a child who loves school is an important key for their future. So how do we set our children up to be successful? How do we get our children to love studying instead of viewing it as a chore?
Ways to Get Your Child to Love School
Apply their passion for the lessons they are learning in school.
What are they passionate about? What kind of things do they want on their T-shirts (typically a good indicator of what they are “into” – at least for the moment)? For example, if they like dinosaurs, do basic math with some of their dinosaur toys.
In essence, there are several things you can do to make learning fun for your kiddo. But making it into a daily habit requires persistence and consistency. Set a schedule and stick to it! And remember, “monkey see monkey do.” Whatever you do, your child may mimic. So be sure you have healthy habits yourself!
Set up a reward system.
While this may seem easy, it is actually trickier than it looks. Some studies suggest NOT setting up a reward system because the child focuses more on the reward rather than the task at hand. For example, if you give your child a sweet whenever they read a book, this can trigger them to associate sweets with rewards. This could or could not have an effect on their health and diet later on in life. Instead, do a happy dance with them or make up a cool handshake.
Have them focus on their actions rather than the reward.
It’s easy to get things done due to a reward but having them perfect their actions and focus on that helps them hit their target more often than not. For example, archery students sometimes miss the target when they focus on the on the target. However, when they focus on their stance, how they hold the bow, and in their breath, they are more likely to hit the target. The same goes for school!
Make up fun ways to study.
Turning study time into a game makes it fun for your kiddo. You can have them write comics or stories about what they learned or even a song. You can also study somewhere different, or have their friends come over and do a fun study group. Again, this is more applicable for younger children, but getting them started early is a great key to getting them to sustain this behaivour!
From a young age, surround them with books.
While toys are fun, surrounding your child with books can impact their study life. In fact, it’s even better if you are an avid reader yourself. Children tend to mimic their parents. Whether they are stories or informational books, such as the different kinds of dinosaurs, cars or history, be sure to surround your children with them so they are inspired to pick them up and engage!
